WOW! What a very deep book. My first reaction to it was that it was going to be a typical loner brother, popular sister drama in which they go through life hating each other until they get older and realize that nothing is as important than family, but boy was I off! The title alone tells you that this book is going to be stanglely mysterious. The cow and knome make you instantly have crazy thoughts about the book.
As I started to read the book, I could definetly see what great characters Bray was writing about. I thought back to my years in high school and could put peoples faces that I knew with the characters in the book. She did a wonderful job making the characters come to life. I am sure that many YA's could easily set their lives into this book and it's characters. The progression of the characters was so visible as well. Cameron, Jenna, mom, and dad in their typical everyday life trying to have as little contact as possible to each other and then after Cameron's diagnosis the connection between all of them changed. Cameron by far had the most growth in his views of life. He started out as rebelous loner who had no friends, lived to get high, and stay away from his parents and his sister but ended up understanding the real things to live for. I loved seeing the transformation of him througout the story.
The plot of this story was very important. It was very fast paced and full of twists and turns, which is the way that YA literature should be. I liked the way Bray flipped back and forth between the hospital to Cameron's adventure. Even though is was a little hard to follow at times, it made the plot more interesting. By using this technique, Bray was able to keep the reader curious about what was reality and what was Cameron's dreams.
I would love for this book to come to life in a movie if they made sure to not leave anything out. It has such a great plot and characters. I think it would be awesome to watch on the big screen.
