Going Bovine
A story about Mad Cow Disease! That is so weird! When I started this book, my thought was what is the author going to do here. A good story I found out. I liked the humor spread throughout and also the friendship between Cameron and Gonzo. Everybody needs a good friend like that. After these two set off to find a cure and save the world and all that, I kind of thought the book became less credible. The early chapters where Cameron was dealing with peers, school, his body doing crazy things (due to the disease), was going along like normal. Then they leave the hospital and get into such a variety of situations. At one point when Cameron mentioned seeing Glory, I wondered if he was actually still in the hospital and had come "to" for a moment. Found out at the end I was right, he had been dreaming the whole thing. It made for a good story about dealing with peers, rebellious body parts, and the knowledge of an early exit from life, though. Most teenagers think they are immortal and death is a long time off. This book could be used to change that popular opinion. YA literature needs more stories about health issues and dying young. I have read where car accidents are like the number one killer of young people, yet teens continue to speed and drive out of control while on cell phones. I hope one day something will make them take notice.
